Our
story

Why Public Health in Tech and Public Health 360 Job Board were created.

During a job search back in 2018, while looking for traditional public health roles, our founder Michelle Obijekwu, MPH came across a job posting for a UX Researcher role on the Equity team at Meta. That was her first time hearing about UX research — or seeing a role she could genuinely fit in the tech industry. She kept that in the back of her mind.

While working as a public health consultant on a traditional PH project, Michelle's team was made up of both public health professionals and UX researchers, because they shared a similar skillset. From there, she began learning more about UX research, preparing for the career transition, and eventually landing interviews and offers at Meta, Google, Indeed, Thermo-Fisher, Chime, and Best Buy. Along the way, she also started recognising the connections between public health skills and a wide range of other careers like x, y, and z. In 2021, she landed her first industry position.

After her own journey — and knowing just how much work it took to make those connections, understand industry roles, and navigate interviews — Michelle built Public Health in Tech. Sitting on her living room floor, she created an Instagram page. Her first post: “How to Use Your Public Health Skills in Tech.” Over the years she ran workshops, events, and wrote blogs to spread the word to both job seekers and employers. But she realised the mission needed to go beyond advice and conversation.

Public Health in Tech is now a custom-built, software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform — a one-stop shop for one stop shop for x,y, and z. Our first solution, the Public Health 360 Job Board, was created to bring all public health opportunities into one place — so that professionals never have to stumble across their next career the way Michelle did.
